What a hero name signals
A superhero name is a power, a silhouette, and a single word a stranger can shout in panic. Its job is to carry all three before the hero ever lands on the rooftop. When a reader meets a hero called Nightveil or Captain Velocity for the first time, they're not parsing the etymology. They're asking what she can do, what she looks like at a distance, and whether the city has been calling her this for years or only since Tuesday.
This superhero name generator works off your brief. Tell it the power type, the tone, the gender register, and the origin in a single line, and it returns six codenames with reasoning, each one shaped to the hero you're actually building rather than a generic capes-and-tights default.
How to use this superhero name generator
Sub-type points at the power, and the power points at the noun. Strength heroes take heavy nouns (Titan, Bastion, Juggernaut). Speed heroes take motion words (Velocity, Pulse, Vector). Mind heroes take Latinate roots. Elemental heroes take fire, ice, storm, stone. Tech heroes take mechanical nouns. Cosmic heroes take star-words. Antihero and dark pulls from Wraith, Specter, Onyx. Pick the sub-type for what the hero actually does.
Tone (classic heroic, dark and gritty, funny, kid-friendly) pushes the result up or down the register without changing the formula. The gender filter shifts the title bank: Captain and Doctor are unisex, Lady and Madame skew female, Sir and Lord skew male.
Use the additional-details field for the origin in a single line: the lightning strike, the lab accident, the long career as a journalist. Six codenames come back with short origin notes. Favourite, regenerate, and use the illustrate button when you also want to see the costume.
So you want a good superhero name?
Making a superhero name that works is less about branding than people expect. It's still a name, and the trick is keeping it in the family of words that already sound like names, not slogans.
Use the title-plus-noun formula for classic register
Captain America. Doctor Strange. Mister Fantastic. The Flash. A title (Captain, Doctor, The, Lady) plus one strong noun that hints at the power. Two syllables on the noun is the sweet spot; longer than that and the name starts reading as a parody. Captain Velocity works. Captain Multidimensional doesn't, and you can hear why.
Use the single evocative noun for the modern variant
Spider-Man. Wolverine. Daredevil. Storm. One concrete noun, usually an animal, a weather phenomenon, or a weapon, carrying all the meaning. This register skews darker and more modern than the title-plus-noun pattern. Works best when the noun is sharp, physical, and one or two syllables. Anything softer drifts back toward the classic formula whether you want it to or not.
Match the noun to the power first
Strength heroes take heavy nouns (Titan, Bastion, Juggernaut). Speed heroes take motion verbs treated as nouns (Velocity, Pulse, Vector). Cosmic heroes take star-words: Nova, Pulsar, Stellar. Tech heroes take mechanical nouns: Cipher, Aegis, Relay. Pick the bank first, the specific word second. Antiheroes invert the palette (Wraith, Specter, Onyx) and add a definite article to push it darker.
The hero's name belongs to the public, not the hero
In the strongest traditions (Moore, Miller, the early Marvel runs) the codename is coined by someone else. A journalist on deadline, an enemy at a microphone, a witness in a diner. Build the name from the angle of the first person who saw the hero do something extraordinary, not from a logo brief. A hero who picks their own name should be read as a brand, and the reader should notice.
